Femke van der Berg

Principal Deliverability Engineer

📍 Amsterdam, Netherlands

Principal deliverability engineer specialising in PowerMTA cluster architecture, ISP relations and large-scale sender reputation management. Twelve years across the MTA stack — from VMTA design at a Dutch ESP through inbox placement engineering for European retailers sending nine-figure monthly volume.

Background

Femke leads the deliverability engineering practice at Blue Spirit Hosting. She joined in 2018 after seven years at Spotler (formerly Mailplus), where she ran the SMTP infrastructure and ISP relations function during the company's scaling from 200 million to 2 billion emails per month. Her core technical work covers PowerMTA virtual MTA topology design, multi-IP pool segmentation strategy, and the operational discipline of warming, rotating and decommissioning IPs across the Gmail-Outlook-Yahoo-iCloud quartet.

She is the architect of Blue Spirit's "engagement-first" warmup methodology, which replaces the traditional volume-curve approach with a relative-growth-rate model calibrated against per-ISP reputation signals. Across roughly 800 IP warmups since 2020, the methodology has reduced average time-to-full-volume from 42 days to 27 days for B2C senders and from 56 days to 34 days for cold-outbound B2B operators, while keeping spam complaint rates below 0.08% on Gmail Postmaster Tools throughout the ramp.

Femke contributed to the M3AAWG sender best practice document review process in 2022 and 2024, and has presented at the Dutch Email Marketing Association annual conference three times on topics ranging from BIMI implementation tradeoffs to the operational impact of Microsoft's May 2025 5,000-emails-per-day enforcement. She is fluent in Dutch, English, German and reads technical Spanish and French.

Outside work she races sailing dinghies on the IJsselmeer, reads paleography (medieval handwriting) for fun, and is slowly restoring a 1968 Citroën DS in her garage in Amsterdam-Noord.

Selected projects at Blue Spirit

A non-exhaustive list of work Femke has led or contributed to, with the operational metrics that came out of each.

Multi-region PMTA cluster failover redesign

2024 Q1–Q3

Re-architected the cross-jurisdiction failover layer between NL, BG, MD and LU nodes to reduce automatic failover time from 90 seconds to under 22 seconds, with deterministic VMTA mapping preservation across regions to maintain reputation continuity during failover events.

  • Failover time: 90s → 22s
  • Reputation drop on failover: <2 points (was 8-12)
  • Regional capacity buffer: 80% → 60% utilization ceiling

Engagement-first warmup methodology v2

2022 Q4–2023 Q2

Designed and validated the relative-growth-rate warmup methodology against 200+ controlled IP warmups across major ISPs. Replaced absolute volume curves with engagement-signal-driven ramps that adapt to per-ISP reputation feedback in near-real-time.

  • B2C average warmup duration: 42d → 27d
  • B2B cold outbound warmup: 56d → 34d
  • Spam complaint rate during ramp: <0.08% on GMail PMT

Microsoft 5K enforcement adaptation playbook

2025 Q2

Coordinated the operational response to Microsoft's May 5, 2025 enforcement of the 550 5.7.515 rejection threshold for 5,000+/day non-compliant senders. Developed the cross-tenant remediation playbook that brought 100% of Blue Spirit's affected client domains into compliance within 14 days of enforcement going live.

  • Affected client domains: 217
  • Compliance achieved within 14 days: 100%
  • Median revenue impact during transition: <€2,400 per client
